Before you ring

Working out whether it is a job at all, and whether it is ours.

Do I need council approval to remove a tree?

Sometimes. Moreton Bay Regional Council and Brisbane City Council both protect certain vegetation, and whether your tree is covered depends on the overlay on your lot and in some cases the species. Check before you book. We will flag it if a tree looks protected.

What is the difference between tree lopping and tree removal?

Removal is the whole tree, out of the ground. Lopping is cutting back what is there, usually for clearance or to take weight out of a limb. In practice most people use lopping to mean any cutting work, so tell us what you want to end up with and we will tell you which one it is.

Do I need to know what kind of tree it is?

No. Most people ring us knowing roughly how big it is and what it is near, and that is plenty to work with. A photo from far enough back to show the whole tree tells us more than a species name would.

Can you take out a tree between two houses?

That is most of the work around here. It is done in sections, with the limbs roped and lowered rather than dropped, which is slower than an open block but perfectly routine.

Do you remove dead trees?

Yes, and they need treating differently. Dead timber cannot be trusted to hold a rigging load or a climber, so a dead tree is often taken down from a machine instead of climbed. Worth mentioning when you call.

Are you insured?

Yes. Tree work is high risk, so there is current public liability cover in place for the whole time the crew is on your property. A certificate of currency is available on request.

How far do you travel?

Caboolture, Morayfield, Burpengary, Narangba, Kallangur, North Lakes, Deception Bay, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Kippa-Ring and Bribie Island. If you are just outside that, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Getting a price

How the number gets to you, and why it is the number it is.

How much does tree removal cost in Caboolture?

It comes down to size, species, access and what is underneath. A small backyard tree with a clear drop is a very different job to a large gum over a roof that has to be roped down piece by piece. Stump grinding is usually priced separately, per stump.

Do you charge to come out and quote?

No. Quotes are free and there is no obligation to book anything off the back of one.

Can you price it from photos?

Often, yes. A couple of photos from far enough back, plus a rough idea of what is under the tree and how we would get to it, is usually enough for a straight answer. Bigger jobs and anything near a roof or a powerline we would rather come and look at.

Why do two quotes for the same tree come out so far apart?

Usually because they are not quoting the same job. One may include the stump, the clean-up and the cartage where the other leaves you a pile of timber and a stump in the ground. Ask each quote what happens to the debris and whether the stump is in the price, and the gap normally explains itself.

Is the stump included in the removal price?

Not by default. Grinding is a separate machine and a separate visit in some cases, so it is quoted per stump. Ask for it up front and it goes on the same quote.

On the day

What actually happens when the truck turns up.

Do I need to be home?

Not usually, as long as we can get to the tree and you are happy for us to work unattended. If the only access is through a locked gate or the house, we will need you there or a way in.

How long does a tree removal take?

A small garden tree can be gone in a couple of hours. A large gum over a house with a hand carry to the truck can be a full day or more. The quote will tell you which one yours is, because it is priced from the time it will actually take.

Will the removal damage my lawn?

Some marking is normal where timber is dropped and dragged. On soft ground or where a machine has to come in we use ground protection, and the area gets raked off at the end. If the lawn is a concern say so when you book so we plan the drop zone around it.

Where does the crew park, and how much room do you need?

A truck and a chipper need roughly two car spaces on the street, ideally as close to the tree as we can get. If parking is tight or the street is narrow, tell us when you book so we can plan it rather than discover it.

Should I move anything before we arrive?

Cars off the driveway and anything light and breakable away from under the tree. Pot plants, outdoor furniture and the like. We will move what is left, but it is quicker if the drop zone is already clear.

What about pets?

Keep them inside or at a neighbour's for the day. Chippers are loud, gates get propped open while we carry debris out, and a dog in the yard slows the whole job down.

After the crew leaves

What is left behind, and what happens if something is not right.

Do you take the mess away?

Yes, and it is included rather than an extra. Branches get chipped, the debris is raked up and everything is carted off. If you would rather keep the mulch for your garden beds, say so and we will leave it.

What if something gets damaged?

Tell us before we leave the site if you can, and straight away if you spot it later. That is exactly what the public liability cover is there for, and it is a great deal easier to sort while the job is fresh.

What if a branch gets missed?

Ring us and we will come back and finish it. It is a short trip for us and it is not worth you living with a job that is ninety per cent done.

Job by job

Questions about one kind of work

Each of these pages finishes with six questions specific to that job, from what moves the price to what is left behind. Go straight to the one you need.

Chasing something about a particular suburb instead? The area pages cover access, parking and what is common to the trees around there. Anything that needs more than a paragraph is in the advice pages, and if you would rather know who turns up, that is the crew and the gear.

Still not sure what you have got?

Ring and describe it. Two minutes on the phone usually settles whether it is a job, what it would take and roughly what it costs.
